Tango hot pot is the hottest thing in Houston.
But it isn’t just for kids.
It’s a restaurant for older folks, too.
We caught up with Tango co-owner Tony Sanchez to find out what it’s like to be a Tango veteran.
What’s the difference between a traditional hot pot and a Tino?
Tino is a hot pot with rice and beans, usually with green onion, tomatoes and avocado.
Traditional hot pots have more meat and vegetables, so they’re a little more complicated.
A Tino might be a hot potato or something with rice, a little of everything, and then green onion and some meat.
What makes a TINO unique?
A lot of it is the green onion.
I think people like that it’s a little bit of an alternative to eating a traditional soup or stew.
Is there a reason it’s so popular?
Tinos are so popular, especially among older people.
You can’t go out and buy a regular hot pot anymore.
The whole concept of it, if you want to eat a hotpot, you have to bring your own food, you can’t just bring your kids to your local restaurant.
But people like the idea of being able to get a traditional meal.
So what makes a traditional Hot Pot different?
A traditional hotpot has a lot of meat, like a pork belly.
You add in a lot more green onion than a Tico.
The Tino has a different texture and flavor, because the green onions really give it the richness.
You’ve got a little less of a meatiness.
Are there any challenges?
There are some challenges.
A lot is about being able for your kids and family to enjoy the food, because they’re older.
A ton of people have tried it.
They’ve all been very excited.
Is it good for the environment?
A Tico has no plastic, no wood, no petroleum, no anything.
It uses natural ingredients, so it’s all natural.
You know, it’s the most sustainable food on the planet.
Are you going to have to change the way you prepare the food?
We don’t have to.
We just have to be careful about the environment.
We’re trying to preserve our food and our way of life.
What do you want people to know about Tinos?
We have a great customer service team.
You don’t want to be on the other end of a call when you have a customer and they’re like, Oh my god.
I don’t think I’ll ever eat that again.
But that’s our goal.
Do you have plans to open a second Tino franchise?
We’ve got plans to try and expand.
It’d be cool to open another location.
How do you prepare a Tinos steak?
You put the steak in a pot of boiling water and let it cook for 15 minutes.
Do they cook it like they normally do?
They take the meat out and then they boil it for another 15 minutes, or until it’s cooked through.
So it’s very different.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten?
A real meal of rice and green onions.
What does the food taste like?
A great meal of chicken or pork belly, if we can find a spot.
What are the best parts about working in the hot pot industry?
I think that’s one of the best things about the business.
You get to meet so many people that you learn so much about cooking and everything in the industry.
I just learned how to cook a great stew and I’ve learned how the Tino was created.
Do I want to cook it?
What is the biggest challenge you face?
Sometimes there’s just a lot to deal with.
There’s a lot in life that you have no control over.
There are so many things you don’t know.
And you don?t want to miss any opportunity.
What else do you love about the industry?
It brings people together.
I love the fact that we’re just a bunch of kids hanging out, and I think it’s great to be able to have a social gathering like that with a lot less people.
Are your Tinos going to be at all different locations?
We’re planning on opening up at least two locations.
We’ll be in the Tarrant County Market area.
What would you like people to do when they visit a Tinto?
If they want a meal, go out there and enjoy a meal with friends.
If they have a friend that they like, go to their Tino.
We want people from different communities and different ethnicities and different ages to come out to our Tinos and enjoy food.
What other hot pot restaurants have you been to?
We had a great time in the Bayou City.
The food was fantastic.
We had some great food, and people were just so happy to be there.
